Data Analytics for eLearning

Monitoring the Health of eLearning

The Covid-19 pandemic forced school districts nationwide to pivot to digital learning overnight. With school systems scrambling to get enough devices, hotspots, and digital tools for their students, concerns immediately arose about a potential decline in student engagement.

CatchOn’s new data analysis delivers some welcomed news to education communities—while districts experienced a significant decline in student engagement at the onset of the pandemic, they quickly rebounded at the start of the 2020-2021 school year, reaching higher levels of digital engagement per user that before the pandemic. CatchOn has generated these findings based on actual data usage data from 47 school districts nationwide from January 2020- January 2021.

Watch Monica Cougan, CatchOn’s Manager of Strategic Relationships and Initiatives, provide a quick overview of student engagement data trends.

CatchOn’s aggregated data delivers a holistic view of digital learning patterns, providing insight into what tools and apps students are actually using, when they are using them, and how often they are using them.

Some interesting findings from the report include
• Pre-pandemic, unique engagements per user averaged 18 per day
• Fall 2020 engagements grew to 35 on average per day
• Weekend and evening engagements increased per user in fall 2020 compared to winter 2020.

As education enters a new truly digital era, having insight into application usage and engagement data at the student level is going to become increasingly important to promoting student achievement and ensuring fiscal accountability.
